Jurassic FART?! (Mesozoic actually, but still…)May 8th, 2012

Recent research conducted by British scientists suggests that dinosaurs  may have heated up the Earth’s climate through the severity of their own natural gas.

WHOEVER SMELT IT, DEALT IT….

Apparently our prehistoric chums dealt it in a big way.  Calculations reveal that, as a whole, the dinosaur population produced 520 million tons of gas a year.  These emissions created a “greenhouse effect,” absorbing infrared radiation from the sun and trapping it in the Earth’s atmosphere, leading to increased temperatures.  Learn more at the BBC News site!

Iceman’s Blood is Red Hot!May 4th, 2012

The world’s oldest human red blood cells have been identified on the body of “Oetzi the Iceman,” a 5,300 year old human cadaver, remarkably well-preserved, which was found frozen in the Italian Alps in 1991.  Oetzi, who is believed to have perished from an arrow wound in his back, is the world’s oldest natural human mummy.  Due to the rapid rate at which blood cells degenerate, this discovery is all the more miraculous.  Read more at BBC NEWS…

Over-Stressed Monkeys reveal altered Gene ExpressionApril 11th, 2012

A new study reports that the ranking of Rhesus monkeys within their social group, and the level of accompanying stress of that status, directly alters their genetic condition.  Social and associated stress has been revealed to effect the expression of nearly 1,000 genes in these monkeys, many of which have a marked impact on immune functioning.  Data of similar effects on humans has yet to be obtained.  Read More on Science Daily.com.

Clone a Wooly Mommoth? Sure, why not?April 3rd, 2012

Russian and South Korean scientists have teamed up to embark on a strange and exciting project.  The intention of this joint research experiment is to successfully clone a prehistoric wooly mammoth from genetic material over 10,000 years old!  “By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth’s somatic cells, embryos with mammoth DNA could be produced and planted into elephant wombs for delivery” says Hwang In-Sung of South Korea’s Sooam Biotech Research Foundation.  Is the modern age really ready for cohabitation with these gargantuan tuskers?  Is this unusual experiment doomed to disaster?  Read More Here!

The Museum of Texas Tech University (MoTTU) is featuring a fantastic new installation called “The Ice Age on the Southern Plains.”  This fantastic exhibit features a beautiful skull of the long-extinct Arctodus simus, more commonly known as the Short-faced Bear.  Also in attendance is a skeleton of the likewise departed Smilodon californicus, or as you may know him — the Sabertooth Cat!  These replica items, obtained from The Evolution Store, carry the legacy of these once formidable prehistoric carnivores.  Built to kill, these bad boys were incredibly fierce hunters. Hundreds of them met their demise in the La Brea tarpits, as they nosed around in search of delectable mammoths.  The exhibit, which is awaiting it’s grand opening, is sure to be a feast for the senses!

Dead Mice Resurrected as Guitar Gods!March 6th, 2012

It’s a wonderful thing when a niche interest such as taxidermy becomes a more accessible and user-friendly pursuit for the general public.  This is where Susan Jeiven’s class on anthropomorphic mouse taxidermy enters the picture.  Anthropomorphic taxidermy, the practice of mounting and displaying taxidermied animals as if they were humans, may appear like a somewhat morbid pastime at first glance, but Jeiven’s incredibly popular workshop has been sold out since December, and is booked solid through May!  Sign up for this amazing workshop at the Observatory art and events space in Gowanus, Brooklyn!  See some fantastic photos and find out more at The Daily Mail!
