Shark in a Jar - Squalus acanthias
The Spiny Dogfish Shark is found in temperate waters worldwide, and is one of the best-known sharks in the world. It is one of the “Viviparous” sharks, which is to say that though the young develop within eggs as do other fish, they do so within the mother’s body, hatching and continuing to develop until they are born as live pups. The male may grow over 3 feet in length, reaching maturity at around 11 years, and the female may grow over 5 feet long, reaching maturity in about 20 years. The Spiny Dogfish is fished for food, fish oil, fertilizer, pet food, and is used in science classrooms as a specimen for dissection. Some female sharks are caught with developing young inside them, and these have been collected and preserved. These baby sharks are not fished for this purpose - they are by-products of commercial fishing.
