Australopithecus aethiopicus Skull, KNM WT 1700 (Replica)
This skull is commonly referred to as the "Black Skull" due to its blue-black color. This Australopithecus aethiopicus skull was discovered by A. Walker in 1985 on the west shore of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. Dated to 2.5 MYA, A. aethiopicus shows a mixture of both primitive and derived features, and dates to a time that makes it a significant addition into the hominid phylogenetic tree. It shares many primitive features with A. afarensis; projecting face, small cranial capacity of 410 cc, it also has features typical of australopithecine species; projecting face, large sagittal crest and jaws, and expanded cheek teeth. Since it seems to fall between A. afarensis and A. boisei, it was given its own species name. Stand available.
