Australopithecus afarensis Skull
Dating from 2.9-3.6 MYA and only discovered within eastern Africa, Australopithecus afarensis is believed to be the earliest known true hominid. Slenderly built, it is believed that A. afarensis was ancestral to both the genus Australopithecus and the genus Homo, which includes modern humans, Homo sapien sapiens. Their cranial capacity ranged from 375cc-530cc, approximately the size of an apes'. They also had stronger jaws, larger teeth, and a more prognathic face than modern humans. Stand available.
