Blue Dragonfly Zoological Poster - Aeschna cyanea

The Science:

Very common across Europe, the Southern or Blue Hawker Dragonfly is a large, colorful predatory insect seen from the summertime into early Autumn. Breeding in freshwater ponds and slow waters in vegetation, it lives as an aquatic predatory nymph for some three years, feeding on small creatures, from invertebrates to tadpoles to fish before emerging as an adult to hunt in flight. Depicted are an adult emerging from the last moult of the nymph, an adult in flight, nymphs in the water swimming and hunting, an adult male (in front) and female (behind - wings not depicted), details of the nymph’s head. This is one of a wonderful series of Scientific German Educational Charts, created in the 1950s and 60s and still produced by the original printer, internationally recognized for producing educational science charts since 1929. These charts are issued today using the original film and same methods as the first printing. They are printed without inscription for both classroom study and decorative purposes, with special attention paid to botanical detail and scientific accuracy.
