Coyotes can be found across Central and North America, from Panama in the south through the northernmost regions of Canada and Alaska. Despite human encroachment on their natural resources, coyotes have flourished as a species and even reproduce in metropolitan areas. They can be distinguished from domestic dogs by their pointed ears and long, drooping tails. As opposed to wolves, which travel in packs, coyotes tend to hunt in pairs and they generally hunt at night. They are opportunistic, versatile carnivores, and feed mostly on small mammals like voles, squirrels and mice. They will also eat birds, snakes, insects and even larger animals like deer or livestock, if available. The various types of teeth in this coyote skull are evidence of its varied omnivorous diet.
