Devil Nuts – Trapa natans
The Devil Nut, also known as the water caltrop or water chestnut, is a floating aquatic plant. It grows in slow-moving water at a depth of up to 5 meters. It is native to warm, temperate parts of Eurasia and Africa.
Devil Nuts are distinguished from other plants by the ornately-shaped fruits that they bear. Each fruit contains a single, very large starchy seed. Their seeds have been cultivated in China and India for the past 3,000 years.
These Devil Nuts were collected from New York's own Hudson River!
