Fossil Fish
Green River Formation
Individual shapes and fossils vary but your item will resemble the pictured example.
Diplomystus dentatus was one of the most common fish in the Green River Formation, an Eocene geologic formation in the Rocky Mountains. Fish in the formation are found in layers, and were probably preserved as a result of sudden temperature changes from volcanic activity. Diplomystus fed mainly on Knightia, the most common fish in the formation, and other small fish. It is thought to be distantly related to modern day herrings, alewifes and sardines. These limestone fossils vary in color from light brown to almost black, with the lighter brown ones showing greater detail. All of our limestone fossils are carefully selected to show the greatest detail in the body and skeleton of the fish.
