TRILOBITES
Trilobites are extinct arthropods from the Paleozoic era, the ancestors of modern Horseshoe crabs. Throughout their time on Earth they were forced to evolve in response to a growing number of predators, from the earliest fish to later sharks and dinosaurs. As a result, different species of trilobites had highly developed eyes, retractable antennae, and even protective spines. In general, trilobites range in size from 1/25 to 28 inches, with the largest recorded trilobite measuring 2 feet 4 inches long. Their exoskeletons were composed of calcite and calcium phosphate minerals that were extremely hard and protective of the soft internal organs.
