Item #SS5300
The giraffe is one of the only animals born with its horns already formed. At birth, its horns are soft and can fold back onto its skull so that it can pass more easily out of the mother. Its horns are not truly horns at all but ossicones, or bones covered with skin and hair. Giraffes have no tear ducts, so they clean their eyes with their nimble, 20 inch long tongue which is tough enough to withstand sharp thorns and can be used as a kind of extendable finger to pick leaves from the tallest trees. Giraffes are easily recognized by their long necks and legs and their distinctive coloration. Males can grow over 17 feet tall and weigh more than 2500 pounds. Giraffes are most abundant in Sub-Saharan Africa in savannahs and grasslands.
