Gorilla Hand, Male, Left (Life Cast)

Gorilla gorilla

Item #SS1907

Gorilla Hand, Male, Left (Life Cast)

Gorillas are the largest of all living primates. While they can climb trees, they dwell mostly on the ground on the edges of forests and clearings and walk on their knuckles with their fingers partially flexed to support the weight of their bodies. They live mostly in Central Africa and are endangered because of poaching and habitat destruction. The word Gorilla comes from the Greek “Gorillae,” which refers to a tribe of hairy women described by Hanno the Navigator around 480 BC. They are very closely related to humans and are considered to be highly intelligent. Some gorillas have even been able to use tools and communicate with humans through sign language. Their hands and feet are much like those of human – they have five fingers and five toes, including an opposable thumb and big toe. Because of their opposable big toe, gorillas can grab objects just as easily with their feet as with their hands. This Gorilla hand was cast from an original male specimen from West Central Africa.

This museum quality replica is exactingly cast from an outstanding natural specimen, and hand-finished to match the original. Made in California using polyurethane resin to capture the finest details.
