Homo ergaster Skull, KNM WT 15000, "Nariokotome Boy" (Replica)

Item #SS046

Homo ergaster Skull, KNM WT 15000, "Nariokotome Boy" (Replica)

1.6 MYA, this specimen known as “Turkana Boy” or “Nariokotome Boy” was discovered in 1984 in Nariokotome, Kenya by K. Kimeu. About 12 when he died, Turkana Boy helped scientists gain accurate measurements of brain size, and helped with study into the development of language. Other morphology studies lead to the determination that ancient hominids matured to adulthood faster than modern humans. And the narrower pelvis of H. ergaster reveals a greater ability to run. While believed to be an ancestor of modern humans, the overall KNM-WT 15000 skeleton still had features, such as a low sloping forehead, strong brow ridges, and the absence of a chin, not seen in present day modern humans. The arms of the species were slightly longer than seen in modern-day humans. It is also currently believed that Turkana Boy had a projecting nose rather than the open flat nose-structure seen in apes and possibly acquired in Australopithecines. Stand available.

This museum quality replica is cast from an exactingly-produced sculpture, based on photographs, descriptions and precise measurements of original fossils.
