The name Malachite derives from the Greek for “mallow-green stone,” referring to its resemblance to the Mallow plant. Malachite has long been revered for its beautiful varied colors and texture. Archaeologists believe that the mineral has been harvested for over 3,000 years at the Timma Valley in Israel, also known as King Solomon's Mines. In biblical times Malachite was believed to ward off disease, lightning and witchcraft, and was often used for oils or watercolors or encrusted on other materials as ornament. Most of the malachite mined today is made into silver jewelry
