Mallards are a type of duck that is widespread throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. The males of the species are easily distinguished from the females by their bright green heads.
Mallards are the genetic ancestors of all of today's domestic ducks. Indeed, it was one of the first species of bird described by Linnaeus in his 18th century work Systema Naturae. It is thought to have evolved during the Late Pleistocene epoch (126,000-5,000 years ago).
