Native Argentines had long believed that the iron of Campo del Cielo (literally “Field of Heaven”) had fallen from the sky when the site was first investigated in the late 16th century. Campo del Cielo is a field of 26 craters that covers about 60 square kilometers between the Chaco and Santiago del Estero provinces in Argentina. Two of the craters are filled with thousands of pieces of iron – pieces of a meteorite that crashed on earth over 4,000 years ago. Scientists estimate that the meteorites are about 4.5 billion years old, created coevally with the material that makes up the planets in our solar system.
