Orangutan Foot, Male, Left (Life Cast)

Pongo pygmaeus

Item #SS1912

Orangutan Foot, Male, Left (Life Cast)

Orangutans are large primates that live primarily in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. They are an endangered species and there are an estimated 70,000 orangutan left in their natural habitat. They are known for their striking red-orange coat and their very long arms (which can sometimes be twice as long as their legs). The orangutan has a huge mouth and uses its lips to test the texture of food before eating it. Like the other great apes, orangutans are among the most intelligent of primates. They use tools in the wild in many different ways, like extracting insects from the ground or seeds from a fruit. Some orangutans in Tuanan, Borneo even use leaves as tools for oral communication, which creates an exaggerated squeaky kiss sound. The hands and feet of an orangutan are much like our own, except for their longer fingers and toes and (like other tree swinging primates) their opposable big toe. This replica was made from the left foot of an original male specimen from Indonesia.

This museum quality replica is exactingly cast from an outstanding natural specimen, and hand-finished to match the original. Made in California using polyurethane resin to capture the finest details.
