Piping Hornbill

Bycanistes fistulator

Item #SS5315

The Piping Hornbill is widely spread across central and southern Africa.  While its population is stable, many other hornbill species with smaller ranges are in danger of extinction.  Hornbills are distinctive for their long, curved bills that are often brightly colored.  They are omnivorous and eat a wide variety of foods, from fruits and nuts to insects and small animals.  They tend to be monogamous and nest in natural cavities or on cliffs.  The first two neck vertebrae of the hornbill are strangely fused together, which probably provides support for its large, heavy bill.
