Spiny Puffer Fish - Diodon hystrix

An Evolution Store classic, the spiny puffer fish is one of our most popular items. This circum-tropical, nocturnal fish is famous for its unique defense mechanism: when threatened, it fills its stretchy belly with water and pushes out dozens of venomous, needle-sharp spikes.

It is considered a delicacy around the world. Only the most experienced chefs attempt to prepare it, though, as one wrong slice could release the deadly poison trapped in the puffer fish's flesh! Our specimens, however, are perfectly safe and can be beautifully displayed on a shelf or hanging from the ceiling.
