Item #OG0515
It is obvious where this Spiny Spider gets its name – its small body is covered in long, threatening spikes that can reach up to 30mm in diameter. Like the wasp spider, it weaves an impressive spiral orb web at dawn or dusk, which it uses to capture its insect prey. While most predators use bright colors and contrasting patterns only to alert predators, scientists think that orb-weaving arachnids and other stationary predators use their bright colors and unusual shape to increase their chances of attracting prey. They are most abundant in Indonesia and eastern Africa. This specimen is set in transparent lucite resin, making it a great decorative piece or educational display.
