Genuine toad purse from the Philippines
The Cane Toad, also known as the Giant Neotropical Toad or the Marine Toad, is a large terrestrial toad native to Central and South America. It gets its name from its history as a form of pest control against the Cane Beetle. A prolific breeder and an opportunistic feeder, this toad has thrived almost everywhere that it has been introduced. After several successful introductions in the Carribean, the Cane Toad was brought to Australia with the hope of controlling the Cane Beetle population. The new Australian had less effect on the pesky beetles, however, than on populations of predatory reptiles. The toad has poison glands that are toxic to most predators, like varanid lizards, land snakes, and crocodiles. To add to the problem, scientists predict that the Cane Toad will continue to thrive in warmer temperatures as other species struggle with global warming. This purse is made from a genuine Cane Toad specimen from the Philippines.
