Western Gray Kangaroo - Male Skull

This large marsupial is commonly found across southern Australia.  It has thick, coarse hair that ranges from pale grey to brown, with paler fur on the throat, chest and belly area.  The species exhibits significant sexual dimorphism;  a male can be up to twice the size of a female.  Male kangroos also give off a stinky, curry-like odor, which has earned them the nick name “Stinker.”  The Western Gray Kangaroo is nocturnal, feeding mainly at night on grasses, shrubs and low trees.  Its digestive tract, like that of a cow, allows it to get more nutrition from its dry habitat through bacterial fermentation.  These kangaroos are social and communicative, and they live together in groups called “mobs” of up to 50 kangaroos.
