Giant Dead-Leaf Mantis - Deroplatys dessicata

THE SCIENCE:

Deroplatys desiccata, commonly known as the Giant Dead-Leaf Mantis, takes its common name from its resemblance to dead, leafy vegetation including having a flattened, considerably extended thorax, and intricate “leafy” patterns on its wings. The insect varies in color from a mottled brown to a very dark, almost-black brown. Members of this species double up on their physical camouflage with movement reminiscent of dead leaves in nature. When disturbed, they rock gently as if caught in a breeze. When threatened, they typically fall to the ground and lie motionless. As with other mantis species, males, which grow to be between 2.56 and 2.76 inches, are the smaller (and lighter sex); females can reach up to 3.15 inches in length. Members of this species are found in scrubland and forest habitats throughout Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, and Sumatra.
