Jewel Beetle - Chrysochroa rajah

THE SCIENCE:

The Jewel Beetle, Chrysochroa rajah, is a species of wood-boring beetle. Members of this species, like other species within the genus Chrysochroa (and the family Buprestidae), have a glossy and metallic exoskeleton to which the common name “Jewel Beetle” refers. The beautiful exoskeleton varies between shades of blue and green, sometimes with red longitudinal stripes and/or spots. Members of this species can reach a length of about 1.26-1.89 inches. The species is native to many East and Southeast Asian nations, including China, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Laos.
