Framed Leaf-Nosed Bat

This is a specimen of Hipposideros bicolor, a Leaf-Nosed Bat which may be found in undisturbed forest across Southeast Asia from Pakistan to East Timor. It gets its name "bicolor" from the coloration of its fur, which is pale underneath, and darker at the tips, though bats from very densely-populated caves will have fur which has been bleached quite orange by constant exposure to the ammonia of other bats' urine!

Bats are incredibly diverse, with more than 1100 species from the tiny bumblebee bat to giant flying foxes with six-foot wingspans. The forelimbs of a bat are webbed and developed as wings, making them the only mammals capable of sustained flight.
