JORO SPIDER - NEPHILA CLAVATA

THE SCIENCE:

Nephila clavata is a species of spider in the Nephilidae family. It can be found throughout much of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, and Thailand. Due to the large size, as well as the bright, unique coloration of the female, the spider is well-known and highly-favored particularly in Japan. Females spin webs that reach up to a meter in width; the yellow threads appear rich gold in sunlight (hence its common name). In Japan, genes from this spider and others have successfully been injected into silkworm eggs; the silkworms that hatch weave cocoons containing spider protein. The dragline silk from these cocoons is often stronger, softer, and sometimes in the case of those injected with N. clavata, tinged yellow.
