Ulysses Butterfly - Papilio Ulysses

The Science:

The Papilio genus, when devised, was originally applied to all known butterflies. It is now restricted to only around 215 species, but Papilionidae, the Swallowtail family, includes many of the largest, most spectacular and prized specimens in the world. Also popularly known as the Blue Mountain Swallowtail, Papilio Ulysses was first described by Linnaeus himself in 1758, and there are now at least 15 known subspecies. Found in Northern Queensland, its range extends across several nearby islands in the Moluccas, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It is a velvety-black butterfly with beautiful intense iridescent blue blazes on the wings that seem to radiate from the body. Its hind wings are scalloped and trail long droplet-shaped tails. Eggs are laid on Euodia, Kerosene-Wood, and Citrus plants, and adults can be found in various habitats from rainforests to gardens. Males are more often seen than the somewhat less-blue females, and can be strongly attracted by objects of bright blue color. The intense color and graceful shape of the Blue Emperor make it one of the most desirable specimens in the world.

    Ulysses Butterfly

Posted by Tyler J Strusowski on Mar 4th 2020

I think this is a must-have for any collection. This type of butterfly is large and the blue markings contrasted with black give it a wow-factor. I think this specimen pairs well with the Papilio Blumei (peacock swallowtail) as they are similar in size and shape. If you are looking for a large blue butterfly, pick the Ulysses.
