Claudina Agrias Butterfly - Agrias claudina lugens

The Science:

This Butterfly is a member of Nymphalidae, commonly known as the Brush-Footed Butterflies, the largest family of Butterflies in the world. Also known as the Claudina Butterfly, Agrias claudina lugens is a striking medium-sized South American butterfly common in the tropical forest canopy. Active in hot weather, adult butterflies feed on rotting fruit or dung, and are not often glimpsed in flight. With intensely blue and crimson colors and typically elaborately-patterned underwings, the Agrias genus includes some of the most attractive and prized species in the world. Male Agrias butterflies have little yellow tufts on their hindwings, structures which give off pheromones to attract females. Agrias claudina is a highly variable species, with several subspecies recognized and more than 200 described variations. This piece is mounted to show the remarkably patterned underside of this amazing specimen!
