The Emma Spotted Swallowtail Butterfly - Pharmacophagus (Papilio) antenor

The Science:

Papilio (or Pharmacophagus, formerly Atrophaneura) antenor is a member of the Papilionidae, or Swallowtail family, which includes many of the largest, most spectacular and prized specimens in the world. A large species with velvety-black wings dotted with cream-colored spots, touched with rust or brick-red at the tail of the hindwings, which trail long drop-shaped tails. Larvae feed on Aristolochia acuminata, a poisonous vine known as “Birthwort,” or “Native Dutchman’s Pipe” and the adult butterflies can be spotted all year-round across their native Madagascar. Vigorous fliers, like others in the Troidini tribe, they can sometimes be mistaken for birds. Not strongly sexually dimorphic, they are very bold, graphic, handsome butterflies. First described in 1773, they have undergone some significant taxonomical revision over time. This piece is mounted to display the topside of this striking specimen.
