The Monarch Butterfly - Danaus plexippus

The Science:

The Monarch butterfly is probably the best-known butterfly in the New World. Native to the Americas, it has spread or been gradually introduced to other places around the world, from Europe to Australia. A member of the Nymphalidae family, or brush-footed Butterflies, it was originally described by Linnaeus in 1758, though he originally placed all known butterflies in the genus Papilio. The Monarch is a Milkweed Butterfly, and various species of Milkweeds provide the food for the larvae, which ingest and store the plants’ toxins making them poisonous to eat (the toxins can be literally heart-stopping) through their adulthood. Particularly famous as an example of mimicry, the Monarch shares a very similar appearance to the Viceroy Butterfly, though the question of which one tastes yuckier to predators is still apparently up in the air (etymologically, The name “Viceroy,” to the “Monarch,” - the “King” - is like “Vice President” to the “President”). Danaus plexippus is also justly famous for its amazing long-distance migrations North and South across North America.
