Silver Beetle Mandible Necklace
Hanging on a 20" chain, this beautiful cast of a real Stag Beetle's head is one of our new favorites!
Stag Beetles have played a part in myth and folklore throughout human history. They are named for their oversized, often elaborately branched mandibles, which vaguely resemble the antlers of a stag. In Britain they were associated with thunder and lightning, and in Germany they were believed to start fires by carrying around burning embers. The heads of stag beetles have long been worn as amulets.
This lovely piece - along with our other insect jewelry - speaks to that tradition, while adding a little of our modern love of science.
