Dog Skull, Saint Bernard (Replica)
Canis familiaris
With their blocky skulls and thick canines, Saint Bernard's are one of the largest breeds of dog, weighing up to 240 lbs and growing up to 35 ½ inches tall. The dangerous St. Bernards pass in the western Alps was named after Bernard of Menthon, and the name also passed to the local dogs. The first written account of a St. Bernard is from 1703. Saint Bernards were bred for their skills as watch dogs, hunting dogs, and most famously, rescue dogs. Barry, the most famous St. Bernard to save people at the pass, saved 40-100 lives from 1800-1840.
