African Spur Thighed Tortoise
The African Spurred Tortoise inhabits the southern edge of the Sahara desert, in Northern Africa. It is the third largest species of tortoise in the world and is the largest species of mainland tortoise (i.e., not found on an island).
This is a very large shell of a domestically-raised tortoise, which died of natural causes. It comes from a male animal, judging from the shape of the anal notch and the long, forked gulular projection which juts out from the front of the plastron, beneath the animal's neck. A beautiful addition to any collection, this handsome shell has been lightly varnished to bring out the subtle striated coloration of the carapace.
