Raccoon Skull – Procyon lotor
The word “raccoon” comes from the Powhatan word “aroughcun”, which means “the one who rubs and scratches with his hands”. Raccoons have a highly developed sense of touch and use their hypersensitive front paws to navigate for food and determine the nature of various objects.
The Raccoon's most distinctive feature is its black “bandit” mask, a common theme in Native American mythology. Raccoons are native to North America, and can be found across Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and even parts of South America.
Raccoons can also be found in Europe, the Caucasus region, and Japan as a result of deliberate introductions in the 20th century!
