Skunk Skull

The skunk is best known for its ability to secrete a liquid with a pungent, foul smelling odor when threatened. The skunk's main predator is the Great Horned Owl, which seems to be immune to its stinky spray. Skunks can be found across America, from Canada to South America, as well as in Indonesia and the Philippines. They are omnivorous, eating insects, lizards, snakes and birds as well as fruit, roots and leaves. They are one of the primary predators of the honeybee, and rely on their thick fur to protect them from bee stings as they scratch at hives to disturb bees out of hiding. Skunks are interestingly immune to snake venom, and can survive up to 10 times the amount of venom as other animals of a similar size. The skull of a skunk is distinct from that of other carnivores in that it has only one molar on each side of the upper jaw, which has an odd square shape, and two on each side of the lower jaw.
