Black Stag Beetle in Resin

The Stag Beetle is arguably the most ferocious looking of beetles. Its huge, antler-like mandibles can sometimes be as long as its body. Despite appearances, the Stag Beetles can't do any real damage with its impressive jaws. Male Stag Beetles use them mainly in combat with other males with hopes of impressing female beetles. The Black Stag Beetle is almost all black with a reddish tint and shiny wings. It lives in North America, mostly east of the Mississippi river, and feeds primarily on tree sap. This specimen is set in transparent lucite resin, making it a great decorative piece or educational display.
