BEAR PAW CLAM - HIPPOPUS HIPPOPUS

The Science

This large mollusk goes by many names-- the Bear Paw clam, the Horse Hoof clam, and the Strawberry clam. It relies on its photosynthetic plankton, called zooxanthellae, for nutrition. 

The Story

The Bear Paw clam is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. It typically lives in shallow waters near shorelines in patches of coral and seagrass beds, but it can be found in coral reefs as deep as 32 feet.
