Carved Water Buffalo Skull Necklace - Bubalus bubalis
The Science
Also known as the Asian buffalo, the water buffalo is the largest of the Bovini tribe, standing at around 5 to 6 tall (at the shoulder). Water buffalos are an important part of the food and agriculture industry in Asia, but their hides and horns are also very prominent materials for accessories and jewelry.
The Story
This necklace is an amazing show-stopping conversation piece. It holds 45 beads, hand-carved by an artist based in Bali, Indonesia. Each skull has a little hole drilled through the side, and holds an amazing amount of detail from the fissures along the top to inside the nasal cavity. Each skull is amazingly anatomically correct and proportioned correctly. Not to mention that a lot of thought also went into the design, as the skulls become gradually bigger and bigger to highlight the final large center skull.
