Scorpion in Resin - Mesobuthus martensii
The Science:
Scorpions are predatory arthropods in the class Arachnidae. They have eight legs like spiders, but are easily recognized by their claws and curved, segmented tail tipped with a venomous stinger. Scorpions can be found all around the world, and they flourish in a variety of habitats. Although they can be fearsome creatures with a highly unpleasant reputation, there are only about 25 known species that possess venom strong enough to kill a human. Generally speaking, the toxicity of a scorpion’s venom can be gauged by its claw-to-stinger size ratio; the larger the claws, the less potent the venom.
The Story:
This real small or medium Scorpion specimen, is known as the “Manchurian Scorpion” and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries as a remedy for chronic pain, paralysis, epilepsy, and more. Despite its scary appearance, its sting is painful but not lethal to humans. Embedded in clear Lucite resin, this Scorpion is an excellent conversation piece for your desk or mantle, as well as a great educational display!
