Dugway Geode
The Science:
Dugway Geodes are igneous rhyolite filled with quartz and agate crystals, formed through volcanic activity millions of years ago. When molten rhyolite flowed across the Earth's surface, it created hollow "Lithophysae" or rock bubbles. As the lava cooled, minerals like cristobalite and perthite crystallized into spherical shapes, and in some cases, gas escaped, forming star-shaped cavities. Over time, trapped gas and moisture seeped through the rocks, depositing layers of chalcedony and agate. As moisture seepage slowed, quartz crystals formed, creating unique and colorful internal structures.
The Story:
These Dugway Geodes are found in Juab county Utah and cracked open to see the beautiful agate and quartz inside.
