In our years of collecting, we've come across some amazing natural history-inspired art. In fact, many customers often come to us to find objects that spark their creativity. Every time we see such pieces of art, they inspire us to keep going, continuing to find more objects and specimens to bring wonder and fascination to a new generation of artists.
It has long been our hope to one day share with our community some amazing natural history-inspired art, beyond the scientific specimens we sell. To this end, I would like to introduce you to Natalie Woodson.
Natalie Woodson has been engaged in personal commissions and participating in art shows since the young age of 12, when she began working with pen & ink and scratch-board etching. She later attended The School of Visual Arts in NYC, studying under the tutelage of Adrienne Leban, Kevin O’Callaghan, Russ D’Anna, Tony Palladino, and Tim Samara, each leaving a profound mark on her creative life.
Natalie has participated in over 20 group shows, notably winning the Conception Arts Show’s Award of Excellence in TriBeCa, NYC in 2019. She is a distinguished member of multiple art collectives, including the Salmagundi Club and Spliced Connector.
During the summer of 2020, while our store was boarded up, Natalie took it upon herself to “paint” the streets of downtown NY with her pyrography art, gifting the city with a little bit of beauty during a very difficult and complicated time. We were lucky enough to have Natalie create an inspiring piece on the plywood boarding up our store. We've kept this piece safe, and every time we look at it, it reminds us of how important Evolution is to people and how much they care. Thank you, Natalie, for this gift.
We've reached out to Natalie and asked her if she would like to do a pop-up in our store with some of her art pieces. She said yes! We are excited to bring to you Skulls & Souls, a collection of four of Natalie’s pyrography works, including two done during the summer of 2020. Come visit us for the month of February and see the art in person. Click the link bellow for the Artist Statement and a list of the works you can expect to see.
When: February 1st – 29th.
Where: The Evolution Store 687 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
