Prep Your Own Fossil Kit

Fifty million years ago, three large lakes covered Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The smallest, now called "Fossil Lake", was 50 miles long and 20 miles wide at its maximum. The warm lake waters supported 25 kinds of fish, stingrays, insects, crocodiles, snakes and turtles, bats, birds, the first primates and dog-sized horses and rhinos.

Knightia and Diplomystus, the most prevalent fish in the Green River Formation, offers a captivating glimpse into the Eocene epoch of the Rocky Mountains. The impeccable preservation of these fish in limestone, often attributed to sudden ash falls from volcanic eruptions, makes them a remarkable relic of ancient aquatic life.

While
Knightia were a primary diet for larger fish like Diplomystus, they themselves thrived on algae and plankton, positioning them as secondary consumers in the aquatic food chain of their time.

The hue of these limestone fossils varies based on the stone layer they originate from. Their spectrum ranges from light brown to an almost black shade. Interestingly, the lighter brown fossils often reveal more intricate details, making each piece a unique testament to nature's ancient artistry.

Your kit contains all you need to prepare and preserve your own fossil fish, chipping away at the stone and brushing your fossil free! Explore your paleontologist dreams!
