PURPLE SPUTNIK - PHYLLACANTHUS PARVISPINUS

The Science

Also referred to as the Slate Pencil Urchin, this specimen is named for its thick, blunt spines that resemble unsharpened wooden pencils. It's an herbivore that prefers to feed at night, using the sharp teeth on its underside to scrape up algae.

The Story

Purple sputniks primarily found in costal waters and along rocky shores around Australia.
