ARMADILLO HEAD IN A JAR - DASYPUS NOVEMCINCTUS
The Science
This specimen is the head of a Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), the most widespread of the armadillo species. They are nocturnal creatures who live in a variety of environments such as rainforests, grasslands, and deserts. Unlike the Three-banded Armadillo, the Nine-banded Armadillo cannot roll itself into a ball. It has several other notable survival techniques, however. If sufficiently frightened, this armadillo can jump 3-4 ft up in the air! It can also inflate its intestines to float across rivers! This adaptability has allowed it to thrive throughout North, Central, and South America.
The Story
This armadillo originated in Florida. It was treated with formalin for several weeks and then transferred to its jar filled with 70% rubbing alcohol. The rubbing alcohol can be added or replaced as needed.
