ATERIAN POINT
THE SCIENCE
The Aterian is a Middle Stone Age stone tool industry centered in North Africa. The earliest Aterian dates to c. 150,000 years ago, around the beginning of the Last Interglacial, when the environment of North Africa began to ameliorate. The Aterian disappeared around 20,000 years ago.
THE STORY
The Aterian is associated with early Homo sapiens at a number of sites in Morocco. As the points are small and lightweight, it is likely that they were not used directly with the hand, but instead thrown like a dart. These stone tools are a fascinating link with our ancestors!
