DONKEY’S EAR ABALONE - SEASHELL

THE SCIENCE

The donkey’s-ear abalone, Haliotis asinina, is a species of sea snail in the family Haliotidae. Both the common name and the scientific name refer to the shape of its long, narrow, and curved shell, reminiscent of a donkey’s ear. An adult’s shell is about 3.5 inches long on average, but individuals have been recorded with shells up to 4.7 inches long. The outer surface of its shell is quite smooth, save for five to seven ovate holes along the body whorl, and resists encrustation from barnacles and other encrusting organisms. The inner surface is metallic, and iridesces tones of pink and green. This species is nocturnal, and is most-often found around shallow coral reefs throughout the Eastern Indian Ocean and the Western/Central Pacific.
