Tiger Beetle in Resin - Cicindela aurulenta

The Science:

The Tiger Beetle is a slender-bodied, usually long-legged predatory insect that gets its name from the aggressive way it hunts its prey: by running at incredible speeds and pouncing. Its long curved mandibles are perfectly suited for killing and dismantling prey. Though many many species of Tiger Beetle are nocturnal, some hunt during the day, and the long legs of the Tiger Beetle helps to keep its body elevated away from hot sands. The exact position of Tiger Beetles taxonomically is disputed, with their family Cicindelidae now often considered a subfamily of Ground Beetles (Carabidae), and possibly classed as a subgroup within another subfamily.

The Story:

This real Tiger Beetle specimen is embedded in clear Lucite resin, and it makes an excellent little decorative piece or educational display. A very pretty little Beetle found in Thailand and Malaysia, it is a dark blue-green in color with yellow or blue spots on its elytra. It shows the typical Tiger Beetle features of large bug-eyes and long curved mandibles. These cute little Insect pieces are fun to collect and make great gifts for kids!

This is a really neat item for both education and as a conversation piece. If you're interested is insects than I would purchase this item. It certainly is an interesting display piece.
