Libyan Desert Glass

The Science

This rock was formed when a meteorite fell to Earth in what is now Eastern Libya. The intense heat from the impact melted the desert sand, creating this unique, naturally occurring glass. Libyan Desert Glass is believed to have formed around 29 million years ago, making it one of the oldest known impact materials on Earth. Its striking golden-yellow hue and high silica content distinguish it from other tektites. It is found scattered across the Great Sand Sea near the border of modern-day Egypt and Libya.

The Story

Libyan Desert Glass has a legacy that stretches across both prehistoric and ancient history. It was used to make tools as far back as the Pleistocene, and later revered by Egyptian royalty. A carved piece of this glass was famously discovered in the burial treasures of King Tutankhamun. Each specimen is a relic of cataclysm and time, shaped by forces beyond imagination. Due to its remote location and the harsh conditions of the surrounding desert, authentic pieces are increasingly difficult to obtain. We offer only limited quantities of this remarkable glass, sourced responsibly and with care.
