LUNA MOTH - ACTIAS LUNA

THE SCIENCE:

The luna moth, Actias luna, is a species of moth in the family Saturniidae. It’s found throughout much of eastern North America, from Saskatchewan, central Quebec, and Nova Scotia in Canada, down to northern Mexico and central Florida in the U.S.; and in a range of lime-green tones. The luna in its name refers to the moon-like spots on its wings. Members of this species usually reach up to 4.5 inches in wingspan, but a few exceptionally large specimens have been recorded at up to 7 inches- A. luna is one of the largest moths in North America. Their hindwings taper into tails, and have eyespots on them which help to confuse potential predators. Adults are rarely seen, as they only live a week on average post-eclosion (emergence from the pupa).
