Sapphire Chips in Vial
The Science
Sapphire is a variety of corundum, the same mineral family as ruby, but it comes in a range of colors, with the most famous being blue. The blue color is caused by trace amounts of titanium and iron within the crystal structure. Sapphires are incredibly durable, ranking 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making them ideal for fine jewelry. What’s fascinating is that sapphires are not just blue—thanks to variations in their chemical composition, they can also be pink, yellow, green, or even colorless. Some sapphires even exhibit asterism, displaying a star-like pattern on their surface when viewed under a direct light source.
