THE SCIENCE

The spiny dogfish shark, Squalus acanthias, is found in temperate waters worldwide and is one of the best-known sharks in the world. Males grow to just over 3 feet on average, reaching maturity at around 11 years, while females may grow over 5 feet long and reach maturity after around 20 years. This is a viviparous species of shark, i.e. one that gives birth to live young, and it is regularly fished for food, fish oil, fertilizer, pet food, and scientific study.

THE STORY

These baby sharks are not fished for this purpose; they are by-products of commercial fishing. At times, female sharks are caught with developing young inside of them; these are collected and preserved. The Shark in a Jar is one of our most popular items with kids! Better lid?

My son was so absolutely thrilled with his shark in a jar and carried him from his room to the den as it was always with him. Unfortunately he dropped the jar, and while the glass stayed perfectly in tact, the plastic lid cracked. Devastation ensued. I was just thinking if there are any more durable lids that can be used on the jars?

The shark was just as expected. It was well-packed and in good condition. It was a nice little shark. The blue water makes it more realistic, but it makes it a little harder to see. We had one that was clear and it was easier to see the shark. However, this was exactly as advertised and it came quickly. The company keeps you posted on every detail. It was out the door the same day I ordered it. I am pleased with the purchase and my grandson is happy with it.

My shark was confiscated out of my checked luggage at the airport. Unimaginable to me that they thought the liquid was hazmat ! So I searched around and bought yours. Just what I wanted.

It was exactly as promised. It was delivered promptly and was very well packaged. I was a little dubious of receiving a box with liquid leaking out of it, but it came in perfect condition and was my daughter's favorite Christmas gift.

I am thrilled with this. It arrived promptly and was well packaged. The shark is authentic and easily viewed. It is small but very visible. My great nephew will love it!!!
